Bifolding Doors FAQ

Bifolding doors outside were initially called folding patio doors. They were also known as folding bifold patio doors and bifold patio doors. Manufacturers and consumers have only recently adopted bifold doors as the generic name.

Bifold doors can have as few as 2 doors or as many doors as necessary, depending on the size of your opening. They are usually joined with a specially constructed framework that allows them to fold and slide together quickly. Although it is possible to have 6 doors, this is not common.

Increase Natural Light – dimly lit living spaces, large or small, can be completely transformed by installing bifold doors. It completely increases the sense of space. Even if you have a small backyard or garden area, the fact that you can see beyond the back of your house is a great way to increase the feeling of being in space. Even small rooms can reap the benefits of this.

Remove Restrictions – Create seamless spaces between the outside and inside when doors are opened. This is ideal for larger special occasions. Modern bifold doors are more energy efficient than traditional patio doors. They will also save you money on energy costs.

Safe and Secure – Our bifold doors have multi-point locks on the door and shoot-bolts on all other doors, making them extremely secure.

Minimal Disruption – Bifold doors are easy to put together and quick to install. Typically, it takes less than one day to install.

Simple to Operate – Bifold doors are easy to open and close. They can be folded open or closed in seconds.

Increase Value and Appeal – Bifold doors can make your home more appealing to potential buyers. They can also increase the marketability of your home.

You will rarely need planning permission to install exterior bifold doors in an existing opening within your home.

You should have permission to create a new opening, or to enlarge an existing one. However, it is definitely worth speaking with your local authority before you do any work.

You will need the proper planning permission if you live in a listed building (one with a special architectural and historic interest), in an area of conservation, or in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

To operate exterior bifold doors, you need both a primary and guide track. These tracks are located at the head and sill/threshold.

Top-hung systems have the primary track located within the frame head. The doors attach via a carrier with rolling bearings to the track. This track allows the doors to ‘hang’ from it. The primary track is completely enclosed to prevent any possibility of rollers/doors falling off during operation. The threshold houses the guide track.

Pros

Lower threshold – Guide tracks are slimmer than main tracks. Because the guide track is located at the threshold of top-hung systems, the overall height can be lower.

  • It looks nicer and prevents people from tripping on it.
  • Low maintenance – It is very unlikely that general debris will collect on the upper track. This results in less cleaning and maintenance.
  • Doors are kept secured. It is impossible for doors to fall from the top-hung track, adding an additional layer of safety.
  • Easy Operation – Because the weight of the door hangs from its top, it is much easier to fold and slide together.

Cons

  • Lintel or Support – Top-hung bifolds require a sufficient lintel to support the door’s weight.
  • Installation – The weight must be secured to the top track so that it hangs over the entire width of the frame. It can be challenging to drill holes up.

Bottom rolling systems work in the same way as top hanging. The main track is located in the sill/threshold, and all the weight of the door is carried on the floors by the rollers. The head houses the guide track that stops doors from falling out of use.

Pros

  • Installation – Does not require any fixings to the guide track found in the frame head.
  • You will require less support because bottom rolling systems can carry the weight of doors on the ground. This means that you don’t need to support the doors above them.

Cons

  • You will need to clean the bottom track more often to maintain smooth operation and to prevent debris from clogging the doors.
  • Lower threshold – The primary track is usually bigger than the guide track. Bottom roller systems have a lower threshold than top-hung systems. This can pose a danger to your safety and cause you to trip.
  • Safety: If the main bottom track is not well supported, it can dip or sag. Although it is unlikely, a large enough dip could cause the doors to drop from the top guide.

The price of an exterior bi-fold door will vary depending upon the following:

  • Overall width of the opening
  • Construction material surrounding the opening
  • How many doors you need
  • What type of glass you want, e.g double-glazed, triple-glazed, laminated

Typically a fully fitter bifold door installation is within the £2,000 – £4,000 range.

The U value of a bifold doors measures how well it insulates buildings. A lower U value means that it is more efficient in reducing heat loss and improving insulation.

Current building regulations require that a “bifold” door set have a U value less than 1.4wm2k for replacement, new builds, and extensions.

As this is the key figure in the regulations, it is crucial to obtain the U value for the entire bifold set.

Some companies only give the glass’ value. This is often lower than the entire set value.

Doors of the same thickness as uPVC or thermal-break aluminium have better thermal performance than wooden doors.

Thermal breaks are a low-temperature conductive material, such as polyamide, that is placed between aluminium and prevents energy from flowing between them.

Aluminium is a very good thermal conductor, so it is important to have a thermal break when making windows and doors.

Our range of bifold doors for external use have U values that are based on the complete bifold set. They easily surpass the regulations.

A traffic door is preferred by most homeowners. This is a door that can be opened easily without opening any other doors. Also known as a lead door, it folds all doors to one side.

This is best achieved by selecting an odd number of doors.

You can have a set of four or six doors with a traffic entrance, but the doors cannot be folded to one side.

Most of our customers prefer to have bifold doors that open out. This is because if it has been raining, the doors won’t drip onto your flooring.

Additionally, furniture can’t get in the way of doors when they are open or closed.

All of our standard-size bifold doors open outwards.

Bifold doors are more secure than older styles of sliding patio doors or French doors, which only have one locking point.

The combination of bifold door hardware and track systems, along with numerous locking points makes it difficult to lift the doors from the frame.

Multipoint locking systems – these are fitted to most bifold doors, including traffic or lead doors. A single key usually opens 3 or 5 points which are distributed over the height of each door.

Multipoint locks can be either cylinder or cylinder-less. Cylinder Locks can also be called Euro cylinders.

There are many euro cylinders that offer different security features. Lock snapping and bumping are a growing security threat. It is important that bifold doors are specified with anti-snap/bump components. The cylinder should be tested according to the TS007 3 star rating, and have a kitemark – independently tested against snapping.

3 star cylinders marked with a kitemark are very secure. Our bifold doors include 3 star kitemarked standard cylinders. All our bifold doors are equipped with cylinder-less locks. It is a multi-point locking system without a cylinder, as the name implies. The lock is much safer than a cylinder, even a 3-star kitemarked one, because it does not have a cylinder.

Twin Point locks can be found on aluminium bifold doors and offer additional security for non-traffic doors. The handle is mounted at the centre of the door. When you turn the handle 180 degrees, it engages the locking bolt at the top and bottom of the door into its frame. An additional lock can be added to twin point locks so that they can be locked in addition to the lead door.

Drop Bolts, or slide bolts, perform the same function as twin point locks. They are installed separately at the top or bottom of the door, so they must be operated separately.

Security can also be affected by glazing. Most bifold doors are equipped with toughened double-glazed units. If you want that extra security, laminated glass can be ordered at an additional cost. Two pieces of glass are laminated together using a PVB (polyvinylbutyral safety film). It is most commonly used in car windscreens. Even though the glass has been broken, it stays in place making it difficult for thieves to gain entry to your home.
